Significance
A family of rod-shaped, benzo-2,1,3-thiadiazole-based fluorescent dyes containing five conjugated aryl rings is rapidly assembled through Suzuki cross-couplings and Wittig reactions. These green to red emitting molecules show high alignment when dispersed in nematic liquid crystals, with impressive dichroic ratios as high as 12.
