Significance

This synthesis of the alkaloid (-)-swainsonine is noteworthy for the preparation of anti-1,2-amino alcohol F by a directed Petasis-Mannich reaction (N. A. Petasis, I. A. Zavialov J. Am. Chem. Soc. 1998, 120, 11798-11799).
