Significance
The phosphoprotein p53 and the oncogene product MDM2 form a complex that blocks the DNA-bonding domain of p53, thereby preventing it from activating transcription of the genes required for induction of G1 arrest or apoptosis. Chlorofusin is a metabolite of Microdochium caespitosum that antagonizes the interaction between p53 and MDM2, making it a potential lead for cancer treatment.
