Significance
Traditionally, π-conjugated polymers have been produced through a step-growth, polycondensation method. However, the molecular weight and polydispersity are not well controlled. The authors demonstrate the first chain-growth Suzuki-Miyaura polymerization of polyarylenes through use of an initiator unit 2. Application of MALDI and both conversion and competition studies confirm that the reaction initiates from 2 and proceeds through intramolecular transfer of the Pd(0) from 3 to 4 yielding homopolymers of 1a (Mn > 17700; PDI = 1.33) and 1b (Mn = 11000; PDI = 1.53).
