Significance

Described here is a Zn(OTf)2-catalyzed cascade reaction of allenic esters with isonitrile that leads to substituted and condensed maleimides and carbazole derivatives. EDGs and EWGs on allenic esters are tolerated. The method was applied for the preparation of cycloalkylaryl-disubstituted maleimides E and of indole-fused maleimides H which upon aminolysis and photoinduced oxidative electrocyclization afford I, compounds of current pharmacological interest.
