Significance
The first efficient synthesis of high molecular weight poly(2,6-anthrylene) is reported. This family of polymers tends to be rather insoluble, but the presence of long hydrophobic chains at the otherwise very reactive 9,10-positions yields a solubility of over 10 mg/mL in chloroform and chlorobenzene. A higher degree of molecular conjugation is also observed as compared to the poly(9,10-anthrylene) analogue, since in the presented polymer there is less steric hindrance.
