Significance

The bicyclo[4.2.0]octane skeleton, found in several polyketide natural products, is believed to be formed by a sequence of electro­cyclizations. By synthesis of a suitable precursor and demonstrating that the spontaneous cyclization leads to the desired compounds, further support for the biosynthetic proposal has been gained.
