Significance

A Pd-catalyzed cleavage of alkynes with molecular oxygen in various alcohols leading to the corresponding carboxylic esters has been realized. ZnCl₂ ·2H₂O was hereby found to be the most suitable Lewis acid for promoting the cleavage. The reaction was successfully applied to both symmetrically and unsymmetrically substituted alkynes.
