Significance

The use of acetals and ketals is a quite important method of a carbonyl function protection in a multistep synthesis. Herein, an extremely mild, simple and selective protocol for such protection is reported. Particularly interesting is the stability of common acid-labile protecting groups like Boc, TBDMS and THP under the reaction conditions. A broad variety of substrates can be successfully used in this reaction.
