Significance

Tightly convoluted polymeric phosphotungstates were prepared and found to promote oxidative cyclization of alkenols. Thus, poly[1,4-bis(bromomethyl)benzene-co-1,3-di-(4-pyridyl)propane] (1b) and poly[1,4-bis(bromo-methyl)benzene-co-4,4′-bipyridine] (1c) reacted with an aqueous solution of H2PW12O40 (2) to give polymeric phosphotungstate salts 3b and 3c, respectively. Oxidative cyclization of (Z)-4-decen-1-ol was carried out with 3b or 3c (0.2 mol% PW12O40 ³-) in 30% aqueous H2O2 to give threo-1-(2-tetrahydrofuranyl)hexanol in 82 and 83% yields, respectively.
