Significance

trans-4-Hydroxy-l-proline tagged with an imidazolium moiety efficiently catalyzes the direct asymmetric cross-aldol reaction under aqueous biphasic conditions. Compared to the reaction in ionic liquids, better results in terms of catalytic activity and stereochemical performance are achieved. Furthermore, facile separation of the catalyst and recycling for five times without considerable loss of yield and stereoselectivity is shown.
