Significance
The nanocrystalline magnesium oxide stabilized palladium (NAPMgPd(0)) promoted the Heck coupling of haloarenes 1 with styrenes 2 and subsequent hydrogenation to give the corresponding dibenzyls 3 (19 examples, 75-98% yield). The catalyst also promoted the sequential reaction of 1 with acrylates 4 to afford the alkyl phenylpropionates 5 (8 examples, 78-90% yield).
