Significance

The authors report an improved protocol for the palladium-mediated carbonylative annulation first put forth by Semmelhack and co-workers (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 1983, 105, 2034). With this protocol the authors have remedied certain substrate dependant challenges, allowing for a broader scope, improved yields and higher ­selectivity (Org. Lett. 2008, 10, 3017).
