Significance
Silica-bonded N-propyl sulfamic acid (SBNPSA) 2 was found to promote the formylation and acetylation of alcohols and amines under solvent-free conditions. Thus, SBNPSA 2 was prepared from 3-aminopropylsilica 1 and chlorosulfonic acid in chloroform. Formylation of alcohols 3 (X = O) or amines 3 (X = NH) were carried out with 2 and ethyl formate (4) to give the corresponding formate esters 5 (X = O: 14 examples, 30-94% yield) or formamides 5 (X = NH: 6 examples, 40-95% yield). Acetylation of alcohols 3 (X = O) was performed with 2 and acetic anhydride (6) to give the corresponding esters 7 (X = O; 17 examples, 86-98% yield).
