Significance
The use of alkaline earth metals as catalysts offers numerous advantages over transition metals, such as low cost and toxicity. Extending their previous work on calcium catalysis (S. Kobayashi and co-workers J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2007, 129, 5364), the authors present an enantioselective 1,4-addition of malonates to nitroalkenes. Excellent yields and enantioselectivities are obtained.
