Significance
An efficient procedure for the Mn(OAc)3-mediated synthesis of biaryls and heterobiaryls using microwave irradiation has been developed. The reaction of manganese(III) with arylboronic acids leads to the formation of the respective aryl radicals which undergo arylation with benzene or thiophene. Arylboronic acid esters were found to be unreactive under the reaction conditions.
