Significance

(-)-Cubebol, a major constituent of cubeb oil, has long-found medicinal and culinary uses. Recently, it has been patented as a sustained cooling and refreshing agent in the area of flavors. Two previous syntheses from (R)-carvone have been published utilizing metal-catalyzed ­cycloisomerizations from the corresponding propargylic esters.
