Significance

Anthracene-centered 2-D cross-conjugated polymers were synthesized by the Wittig-Horner cross-coupling reaction between a 2,6-diarylenevinylene/9,10-diaryleneethynylene motif (1) and 3,6- or 2,7-diformylcarbazoles. The peak two-photon absorption (TPA) cross-sections (δ) in toluene solutions of P1 and P2 are 2360 and 1520 Gm per repeating unit, respectively. The higher δ observed in P1 is attributed to the stronger electron-donating capability of 3,6-carbazoles compared to 2,7-carbazoles.
