Abstract
A facile and efficient method for the synthesis of six-membered enol carbocyclic compounds was realized by intermolecular cyclization reaction of 3-aryllidenepentane-2,4-diones with t-BuOK in CH2Cl2. The reaction is conducted under mild conditions and shows good functional group tolerance.

- 11 General Procedure: To a solution of α,β-unsaturated ketone derivatives 1a (1 mmol) in CH2Cl2 (5.0 mL), t-BuOK (1.3 mmol) was added at room temperature. Upon completion, the reaction was quenched with H2O, the mixture was extracted with EtOAc (3 × 15 mL), and the combined organic extract was washed with H2O, saturated brine, dried over Na2SO4, and evaporated under reduced pressure. The residue was purified by chromatography on silica gel to afford the corresponding enolate of 2a. Data for 2a: 1H NMR (400 MHz, CDCl3): δ = 7.38 (t, J = 7.2 Hz, 2 H), 7.31 (dd, J = 14.6, 7.2 Hz, 2 H), 7.28–7.24 (m, 2 H), 7.23 (d, J = 4.8 Hz, 2 H), 7.19 (t, J = 6.5 Hz, 2 H), 4.69 (s, 1 H), 3.88 (t, J = 8.9 Hz, 1 H), 3.01 (d, J = 8.7 Hz, 2 H), 2.44 (s, 3 H), 1.95 (s, 3 H), 1.15 (s, 3 H). 13C NMR (100 MHz, CDCl3): δ = 208.7, 205.8, 200.2, 180.2, 140.3, 139.0, 130.0, 129.2, 129.0, 128.3, 128.1, 127.0, 108.6, 71.8, 48.3, 39.2, 36.9, 30.3, 30.0, 25.6.
