Significance

The ceria (cerium oxide) nanoparticles supported on poly(4-vinylpyridine-divinyl benzene copolymer) 1 were prepared via in situ polymerization using Lupersol TAEC (tert-amylperoxy-2-ethoxyhexyl carbonate) and Luperox 101 [2,5-bis(tert-butylperoxy)-2,5-dimethylhexane] as initiators and PVP (polyvinylpyrroridone) as stabilizer (eq 1). Nanocomposite 1 efficiently catalyzed the Biginelli reaction in water. For example, the reaction of benzaldehyde, ethyl acetoacetate, and urea took place in the presence of 1 to give 3,4-dihydropyrimidin-2(1H)-one in 92% yield (eq 2).
