Significance

The authors describe the first report of an asymmetric strontium catalyst and an example of an asymmetric reaction catalyzed by a chiral strontium complex. This Michael addition of malonates to enones is catalyzed by Sr(II) and a chiral sulfonamide ligand, and occurs in good yields and excellent enantioselectivities for a broad substrate scope.
