Cobalt Catalyzed Organic Transformations: Highly Versatile Protocols for Carbon-Carbon and Carbon-Heteroatom Bond Formation

This review deals with our efforts during the last one decade in developing some novel organic transformations catalyzed by Co(II) complexes. We have demonstrated that cobalt(II) chloride is a versatile catalyst in promoting carbon-heteroatom and carbon-carbon bond formation between diverse organic substrates. Our efforts have culminated in the discovery of novel cobalt catalyzed acylative cleavage of ethers, acylation of alcohols, amidation and aerobic oxidation of organic substrates. We have also shown that cobalt(II) is an efficient catalyst in carbon-carbon bond formation between 1,3-dicarbonyl compound and allyl acetate or allylic alcohols or alkenes. A brief account of these findings are presented in this article.
