Significance
The efficient preparation (7 steps, 15% overall yield) of a hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronene (HBC) heptamer in which the polycyclic aromatic subunits are linked by flexible aliphatic chains is described. This species displays interesting aggregation behavior, reversibly generating a highly ordered columnar phase upon heating, and forming gels in toluene and n-heptane.
