Significance

(-)-Cassine, isolated from the leaves of Cassia excelsa, displays antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus. This route relies on a tandem Horner-Wadsworth-Emmons/1,3-dipolar cycloaddition cascade sequence that simultaneously appends the aliphatic side-chain and forms the trisubstituted piperidine ring.
