Highly anti-Selective Catalytic Aldol Reactions of Amides with Aldehydes

Significance

Due to the power of the aldol reaction, it is a widely studied reaction in organic chemistry. This report represents an important addition to the arsenal of aldol reactions in that it is highly anti-selective and utilizes amides as the aldol donor. The use of Ba(Ot-Bu)2 (10 mol%) as catalyst proved to give the best results. Aromatic and aliphatic aldehydes were suitable substrates as well as trifluorophenyl ketone.
