Significance
Using carbene catalysis and an oxidant, α,β-unsaturated aldehydes can be activated towards Michael addition via a double umpolung process. Various β-dicarbonyl compounds 3 undergo conjugate addition to enals 2 to afford dihydropyranones 4 in good yields.
