Significance
Platensimycin, isolated from a strain of Streptomyces platensis, is a potent antibacterial agent. Its novel mechanism of action (inhibition of bacterial fatty acid biosynthesis) promises a remedy for multidrug-resistant bacterial infections. For the total synthesis of platensimycin see: K. C.
