Significance
Simple methods of sensing nucleotides in aqueous environments may provide useful insights into biological pathways and could lead to novel methods in diagnosis of various diseases. The authors report a sensory molecule composed of a zinc(II)-cyclen core with pendant pyrene groups. When thymidine nucleotide binds this molecule, the two pyrene groups are brought together, leading to a turn-on of pyrene excimer emission (470 nm) with concomitant turn-off of pyrene monomer emission (375 nm).
