Significance
An efficient and selective reduction of nitro compounds with CO and H2O was achieved by using gold nanoparticles supported on TiO2. The reaction of nitro compounds (1 mmol) in EtOH (or DMF)-H2O (15 mL, 2:1 v/v) with Au/TiO2 under CO led to the corresponding amines (24 examples). Both the nature of the support and the particle size of gold had a strong influence on the catalytic activity. Gold nanoparticles with a diameter of about 1.9 nm supported on TiO2 showed the highest activity.
