Significance

CuO on mesoporous silica was prepared by hydrothermal treatment of a mixture of gelatin, Cu(NO₃)₂×2.5H₂O, and Na₂SiO₃ in water, followed by calcination (eq. 1). The CuO on mesoporous silica catalyzed the coupling reaction of thiols with aryl iodides in the presence of Cs₂CO₃ in DMSO or dioxane to give the corresponding aryl sulfides in 66-97% yield (25 examples, eq. 2).
