Significance
CuO on mesoporous silica was prepared by hydrothermal treatment of a mixture of gelatin, Cu(NO3)2×2.5H2O, and Na2SiO3 in water, followed by calcination (eq. 1). The CuO on mesoporous silica catalyzed the coupling reaction of thiols with aryl iodides in the presence of Cs2CO3 in DMSO or dioxane to give the corresponding aryl sulfides in 66-97% yield (25 examples, eq. 2).
