Significance

An efficient cationic Rh(III)-diamine-catalyzed asymmetric hydrogenation of cyclic imines is presented. Good to excellent yields and enantioselectivities of the resulting tetrahydro­isoquinolines and tetrahydro-β-carbolines are observed. In general, bulkier substituents on the imine require longer reaction times and show decreased enantioselectivities.
