Significance

The enantioselective oxidative coupling of naphthols to provide binaphthol (BINOL) derivatives is understandably important within the realm of asymmetric catalysis. This would quickly access a number of important catalyst precursors for BINOL complexes. This protocol utilizes abundantly available iron and oxygen as reagents.
